WHEN CULTURES CLASH:
DESTRUCTION AND SYNTHESIS
12:30pm | Prior Perfoming Arts Center, College of the Holy Cross | Worcester, MA

Nourbakhsh - White Helmets as white as death

Maysaud - Decolonized Arabesques

As the military campaigns that they were, the Crusades had an undeniable toll of human death and suffering. They also facilitated the exchange of ideas and the transmission of technical and artistic knowledge as exemplified by the Chertsey Tiles. This concert program reflects on the human toll of the Crusades through the lens of contemporary geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East and represents through music the synthesis that emerged from the clash of the cultures involved.

This concert is part of a series curated by the Department of Music at College of the Holy Cross in response to the exhibition Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

of medieval tiles from the Chertsey Abbey in England curated by medieval art history scholar Prof. Amanda Luyster and presented at College of the Holy Cross's Cantor Art Gallery. Free admission.

"Aren't You the Swan Turner?:" Ethics, Philosophy, and World Harmony in Paul Hindemith's Personal Manifesto
DMA Lecture Performance
)
12:30pm | Morse Hall at The Juilliard School | New York, NY

Paul Hindemith's Der Schwanendreher viola concerto is the composer's personal manifesto, his business card, his way of saying "This is who I am and this is what I care about" through music. The concerto cryptically encodes Hindemith's emotional state during the years leading up to his emigration from Nazi Germany in 1938. But the piece not only reflects the composer's sociopolitical circumstances at a particular time in history; it also encapsulates every aspect of Hindemith's artistic identity: his violist persona, his teaching persona, his theorist persona, his cultural background, his interest in engaging lay audiences, and his philosophy of music. Although the third movement is labeled as "variations," it unfolds in a much more complex way than this label suggests. The movement's thematic, harmonic, and formal anomalies respond to careful design that reflect Hindemith's philosophy of music. The lecture will conclude with a performance of the third movement of Hindemith's Der Schwanendreher.
